At this time I am making my own canvas with Richard Schmid's white lead formula. I like to call Richard’s formula the Superman Surface, the Surface of Power—“I can do anything”. Katie Swatland shares Richard's formula in her new book "Alla Prima II Companion: Richard Schmid's Materials, Tools and Techniques" coming out this summer. I also use: New traditions Art Panels and Canvas - L600. White lead, double primed. www.NewTraditionsArtPanels.com
Ralph Mayer recommended as I do -- all purpose medium:
One part Stand Oil, one part Damar Varnish, five parts Rectified Turpentine.
(A few drops of Cobalt Drier may be added to hasten drying.)
I use Gamsol Odorless Mineral Spirits made by Gamblin.
This is an excellent solvent for thinning oil paint for painting and brush cleanup.
